Q: i use the fresh scent of unstoppables, what scent of downey could i add?

any they all smell good together

I would think they aren't anymore harmful that regular kitchen debris. This isn't fabric softener which goes in during the rinse cycle and all excess goes into the septic system in a higher quantity. I was concerned by some of comments in here so I did a little test in water. Put a scoop of these in a cup of water. Came back few hours later and they were all dissolved (without soap or agitation). There was a thin layer of purple on the bottom. Considering that these are used WITH SOAP I don't see them being much of a problem because if there is an oily component the soap would keep it broken up and then the rinse water would come behind it in the system (unlike with fabric softner which goes down the pipe last). I bought these because I can't use fabric softener in my system and I wanted to be able to control which loads were scented and how strong the scent was. I'll update this post if I have any issues. I'm wondering of those who had troubles either wrongly attributed these to fabric softener (or the septic guy didn't understand what these were) or if they used them in the rinse cycle (without soap). Something isn't adding up on some of those comments.

I had the same residue problem; now I wash everything w/ the power wash, extra dirty so that more water will be released.

Q: Can downy beads be used in a front loader washer

From my experience and research, the simple answer is no. They aren't made for front loaders. They tend to go undisolved and may plug your drain. Many homeowners are unaware of a clean out usually found behind the kick plate at the front of the washer. It will have maybe a quart of water in the screw out port. The last time we cleaned ours it had a washcloth and a dozen coins in it. Add small undisolved pellets and the analog pressure sensor could cause an error and shut down the washer.
