Excellent history of the Antietam fight

Excellent history of the Antietam fight. The fact that it was written by someone who was actually there, and compiled it from personal knowledge, and talking to various participants not really all that long from when it happened, makes this one of the, if not the best then surely one of the best history's that will ever be written about this campaign. And Mr Clemens work to bring it all together is an amazing job. I can't imagine the amount of research and traveling that must have been involved. Not for the casual reader, it's very detailed and quite a long read, but if you are a long time Civil war nut like me then you will definitely enjoy this book. So many new things I have learned even after years of going to the battlefield and voraciously reading all I could find about this incredible time in history.

what was absolutely necessary for me to enjoy this book was having "The Maps of Antietam" by ...

This is an incredible Civil War book. Absolutely everything you wanted to know about the battle of Antietam, right down to regimental level. But... and this is a big but: what was absolutely necessary for me to enjoy this book was having "The Maps of Antietam" by Bradley M. Gottfried at my side. The maps in Maryland Campaign are not very clear or complete, in my opinion. Any book written on the regiment level needs detailed, crisp maps, and this book would not have been readable without Gottfried's map book. But with this reference available, the Clemens book is totally sensational. You actually feel like you're there - in the cornfields, the East Woods, the Sunken Lane... Carmen is somewhat pro-Union in his bias, but what the heck, we won, didn't we..... All kidding aside, buy this, buy the Gottfried book with it, and there's NOTHING you don't know about Antietam!

Tedious Reading

I found this book to be very interesting although extremely detailed to the point of numbness. May have been the writing style of the day, but I found it to be too involved.

Detailed maps and great editing

There’s a lot of detailed information in this portion of Carmen’s manuscript on the preliminary battles of the Antietam Campaign. The style of writing can be hard to wade through sometimes. But the editing, clarification and explanations by Clemens are all top notch and bring everything together. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the edited manuscript.

Maryland Campaign of Sept 1862, Vol II

Outstanding effort here by Dr. Thomas Clemens. It is obvious that his expertise added much to this book as it did for Volume I. Any serious student of the campaign and battle needs to have this in their library. The publisher, Savas Beatie, did a superb job with the production of the book itself. Their volumes are some of the best put together pubs in the market including the cover illustrations/make-up. A few years ago, it was very difficult to access this work by Ezra Carman. Now, available to everyone is not only Carman's original manuscript but commentary by one of the foremost historians on the Maryland Campaign of 1862.

Clemens has done a fine job in editing this book

This book is a goto book in the study of the "Maryland Campaign of 1862." I found this book in the footnotes of another book so I had to order it. I have had the opportunity to tour first hand Antietam and the surrounding areas of South Mountain and Harpers Ferry! Dr. Clemens has done a fine job in editing this book. I highly recommend it!

Carefully edited, extensively annotated, and with helpful maps, Clemens' edition of the Carman manuscript should be on every Civil War historian’s bookshelf or Kindle reader.
