Synopsis The CCIE Routing and Switching certification is the most respected certification in the industry. The successful CCIE candidate must understand a broad range of network technologies that includes OSI model, bridging, LAN switching, IP and IP Routing protocols, multicast, WAN technologies, and performance management. The exam is notoriously difficult and CCIE candidates must first pass a qualifying written exam. The CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide, Second Edition covers all of the topics of the written exam. In this updated edition there are content and alignment changes based on the revised exam and networking trends. For example, there is deeper and greater coverage of MPLS, security, and BGP and BGP designs. New chapters covering IPv6 and IS-IS will be included. Also new to this edition are more challenging exam questions to match the difficulty of the actual exam and the CD-ROM is enhanced with a 500-question exam engine from Boson Software. This book also contains all the elements and features of the best-selling Exam Certification Guide series. These elements include specially designed assessment and study features, such as "Do I Know This Already?" quizzes that assess readers' knowledge and help them decide how much time to spend on each section, Foundation Summary sections that highlight essential concepts for quick reference, and End-of-chapter questions to quiz readers. great author
I am not re-iterating what the other reviewers have written: it is true and I concur.I only want to stress here how good this author is. Wendell Odom has written at all levels for CISCO press, from the "Computer Networking First Step" to this CCIE book, with the CCNA books in between (and there may be others - these are the ones I have). He makes complex topics easy to read and has a very clear mind. These books are all recommended as general networking texts, even for those not aiming for certification. I wish all tech authors were as good ...

THE REAL R&S WRITTEN GUIDE
A must read for every Cisco R&S fanatic especially the CCIE written prospects. I've heard about and read a lot of books on the CCIE written exam and sub topics, but this really stood out as the best, in terms of setting about the "correct" amount of detail on each and every topic covered in the 2006 version of the 350-001. The language, perception and content with useful Cisco links for further studying on all those in-depth and grainy topics really got my confidence going with my prep, and I passed 350-001 at one go even without my CCNP!!! - although I dont' recommend everyone going this way. Wendell Odom is now my guru for rest of my CCIE career. Just one caveat though was that IPSEC wasn't covered in any detail, but neither was any other CCIE written book so had to rely on the Cisco website and some labwork which wasn't a bad experience either - the hard way is always best :-) so Good luck. Also, recommend QOS from Mr Odom as a companion guide to this.

Very Practical Guide
I bought this book about two months ago and recommend this to anyone who is considering the CCIE cert path, however I would recommend this to any networking proffesional as it covers most networking topics in detail but withought the usual Cisco way of reiterating absolutly everything and then doing it again, it is unuaslly concise but very easy to read, I suppose i am just getting sad whren i say I actually enjoy reading this book. In a word its Excellent.

CCIE Routing and Switching written exam guide
For many of us who are studying for the CCIE R&S written exam this is a book that's long overdue. The last CCIE routing and switching guide was out in 2003 and there have been several new areas added over the last couple of years, and several legacy technologies taken out.The book is broken down into the usual Cisco Press layout with the first 20 or so pages taken up with contents, Cisco marketing, acknowledgements and an introduction to the major sections of the book. Each chapter starts by outlining which part of the CCIE written blueprint the chapter is to cover and then the 'Do I already know this already' quiz. The quiz is just 10 or so questions to get a feel for what you do know about a particular area or technology. The answers are in an appendix at the back of course. The next section of the chapter covers the foundation topics, which is the main bulk of the chapter. Closely following this section id the foundation summary where a summary about the chapter is compiled and includes information about timers, commands, RFC's and other key features, very useful for review. Each chapter also includes link for further reading. The book is laid out very clearly and does not include the legacy technologies no longer covered in the CCIE written routing and switching exam like ATM, ISDN and IS-IS. The book has an excellent section on wireless mobility. I managed to find a couple of spelling mistakes and some errors in a couple of questions, nothing major though. There is quite an in-depth section on MPLS at the back of the book, very nice to read if you haven't completed the CCIP certification. This long awaited book is an excellent read, covering all the material on the current Cisco Routing and Switching exam. The CD has a memory builder section to fill in after reading each chapter, the questions from the book and other questions not in the book. They are in a Boson format and easy to install and use.Overall a great long awaited book well worthy of a read for anyone who is studying a high level Cisco exam and an essential for any CCIE R&S candidate.
