First impressions: Great value

I got this radio to add to an emergency preparation kit and I'm pleased with it so far.It takes two AA batteries, which is a feature that is unfortunately lacking in a lot of other radios I was looking through. I don't understand why, considering how prevalent and easy to acquire AAs are - that is exactly what you would want in a tough situation. It's a portable size and I like the yellow-orange color. It is a very affordable price, has access to shortwave, Am/Fm, and the weather band (NOAA weather stations). That's everything I was looking for in a basic radio. It works well and has pretty good sensitivity for the price in my opinion. NOAA works fine and I managed to pick up a few radio stations on shortwave my first time using it even without adding anything to the antenna, including some religious stations and a Cuban radio station. (I'm not sure it would be able to pick up anything very far away but maybe it can; I would need to try more times of day/night and am curious about adding an antenna reel attachment to it.) Am/Fm work well and even more clearly. This radio seems like a great item to add to an emergency kit or for anyone who is curious about shortwave and just wants to try it out first. At the current price, it would not be difficult to replace if anything occurred to it. It gives surprisingly decent performance for the price too.

Great for Weather and FM!

My 5 stars is based on the Weather band, FM performance, and the LOUD and clear audio this radio delivers.Up in the Rocky Mtns it can be nearly impossible to hear any weather radio stations. I've tried on a couple of other WX radios, and gotten nothing at all. This little gem pulls in 2 and sometimes 3 weather stations clearly from up to 40 miles away. Remarkable! The audio is loud and clear...easy to understand even with my deteriorating hearing.SW is a bit tricky to tune, but it does pull in WWV for time on both 10 and 15mhz from 1000 miles away when I'm in Missouri. FM is quite sensitive! Pulls in a 100 watt LPFM station about 12 miles away clearly, even with the antenna all the way down. AM (MW) isn't much to rave about. Mine seems more sensitive at the low-end of the MW band.I DO appreciate that this radio includes a real headphone jack!...And it plays through both channels on all bands, even though it's not really stereo.Seems pretty toughly built. I dropped mine to a hard floor from about 4 feet, and it has no damage.I'm ordering another one of these for my bug-out-bag.

The Little WB Radio That Can

For the last few months I've been searching for a portable radio that had a dedicated weather band. I already own almost a dozen handheld portables but only one of them had a weather band feature, and that radio, a Kaito Voyager has horrible reception in my area of the country. I had a checklist of what I required. The radio had to be small, it had to be able to use regular store bought batteries. It needed to have the ability to receive additional broadcast bands, and finally it had to be better than good with WB reception. I read numerous reviews, scoured specifications and searched Amazon relentlessly. The one radio that continued to check off all my wants was the XHDATA D-221. For less than 20$ US I really couldn't go wrong, and if it didn't work well then I could easily return the radio.I've had the radio now for about a week and I couldn't be any happier. The reception on the weather bands is fantastic. I easily receive two frequencies and both are clear steady and easily understood. For the additional bands, MW (AM), SW and FM. The MW reception is about average for a radio this size so I can't really complain. The SW band for my area is absolutely useless. The analog range is tightly compacted and the only thing that can be heard is the 'Chuffing' between frequencies. More on this later. NOW for the FM band this little radio is stellar. I was able to tune 95% of the channels that I receive on my go to radio which is substantially more expensive. And no WB.I'm very happy that I have this radio and have decided that it will become the radio that is kept in my car for emergencies. Size, reception and ability to use ordinary alkaline batteries determined this.Yesterday I thought I would try a short ten foot piece of wire wrapped around the whip antenna. This definitely improved reception on the SW band. I was actually able to pick up one broadcast albeit a little hard to understand. No real improvement on FM But as I mentioned previously the radio right out of the box is one of the best that I own.If I had a wishlist for features that I think would be beneficial I would have the SW band divided in two so that there was a little better range to tune in a broadcast. If at all possible I would like to see a whip antenna that was a little longer. And finally it would be very helpful to have an external antenna jack.In conclusion..... I would buy this radio all over again in a heartbeat!

XHDATA transistor radio

Pretty good, a little tiny but has good volume. Picks up stations pretty good. I just prefer a more base sound than what this has. Weather station on radios is hard to find so good to find this has it.

A good small 4 band radio

A good portable pocket radio that has multiple bands including weather band to listen to weather warnings. Great to taking along with you to sporting events and Cub and Boy scout campouts or just even keep in your Go bag. So far the only issue is that you need to tune it very slow to pick up stations. Cannot tune it very fast or you will miss the stations. Overall due to price and functionality I recommend buying one if you need something like this that is small and has decent reception. I wish there was a digital version of the same radio. I have several other models of XHADATA radios and would definitely by their products again.

Very pleased

Excellent reception for such a tiny and cheap little radio. The weather band comes in clear and the radio stations do as well. I have not tried the shortwave part of the radio yet because I don't understand it but eventually I will. I cannot stress enough about how good the reception is. I live in the mountains which makes it tough sometimes to get radio but this little sucker picks it up very well.
