Good buy with realsitic expectations
Have had the guitar for almost a month now. For the money you pay, workmanship is very good (as usual for Yamaha), no additional set-up was required with the action quite comfortable for me.Initially it had difficulty staying in tune and the sound was less than impressive, but this was due to the stock strings. No, I have not replaced them yet as after 3-4 days of tuning before playing, they stretched quite nicely and the guitar has been in tune for more than a week now (and played almost daily - several songs).Sound markedly improved as well - it was very tin-like out of the box, it has deepened some. It will probably further improve once I get to replacing the strings.Talking of sound - do not expect to get what you are getting out of your full-size instrument. Obviously the smaller body will produce a different result, but for the money and the flexibility to easily fit in your trunk, overhead compartment on the plane or anywhere else where space is limited (or just grab by the neck and bring it along when going for a picnic), it is great value.I am tall (188cm) and it is more difficult to move along the neck (the distance between both hends is much smaller than with full-size) when you need Eb on 6th fret for example, but it is not impossible. Still very playable once you get used to it.I cannot compare to other 3/4 sizes as I have never owned or played one. If you are looking for a guitar to take on stage - you will likely not be happy with the sound performance, but if you only need it for the occasional travel with friends or would like to strum several chords before going to bed - it is perfect.Oh yeah - gig bag is also pretty good for the price you pay. :)Price paid - GBP104 inclusive of shipping.

five stars JR-1/ FG Junior.
Arrived two or the three days of ordering, very well packed in two cardboard boxes, very well-made set up with a low action made from good materials, good machine heads like Fender vintage but smaller. no fret buzz on any frets but a little bit rough when bending but are starting to smooth out after a little use, very easy to play nice sized three-quarter scale very Ed Sheeran, great sound for finger style, includes a soft case gig bag great value for money for the pro to the beginner, Yamaha have done it again, five stars JR-1/ FG Junior.

A real breakthrough
This is a great guitar, particularly for me. I am an older small person who has always struggled to learn to play a full-sized guitar because of the size of my hands and fingers. The tone of the guitar is good and I have made more progress than I ever have on other guitars.

Great guitar, that really reliable Yamaha sound
Great guitar, that really reliable Yamaha sound. Set up good, no awkwardness it getting use to the feel of the fretboard.....if you've played yamahas before you'll know what I mean. Not a big body so a tiny bit tinny, but you'd expect that....spruce top will get warmer the more it's played. For the money excellent value....much better value than the Martin or Taylor versions (sorry guys the name doesn't carry those for me !) one bit of feedback you need a shoulder strap on the gig bag......4 stars in view of the gig bag strap thing; but that's a personal preference.

Very nice compact guitar.
Bought for my 8 year old daughter who is very happy with it.I did my homework before buying this guitar: I gave up learning as a child as I had a huge box of a guitar with painful-to-hold-down-strings. Put me right off: didn't want this for my little'un.As other reviewers have stated, it's pretty small for a 3/4: it's more like a 1/2 size guitar, but I think this is a better size. Not too much of a stretch for little arms & fingers. It stays in tune remarkably well. All in all would defo recommend.

High action
If you are buying for a child learning and moving over from nylon string my daughter found the high action hard and lots of buzz and twang. Not the guitars fault, I took a punt without her trying it. Guitar is fine, small for a 3/4 though.

Nice travel size "beater" with decent fretwork and tone. Gig bag and strap pegs are a nice touch.
I have a full size solid top dreadnaught, but didn't want to take it with me to deer camp, where it would be exposed to humidity and temperature changes. Fully laminated will be more durable. Also I am not concerned with scratching, dinging or even completely destroying it, since it's a "beater". But it sounds plenty decent for those purposes. I chose Yamaha because I also own a nicer 12-string solid top Yamaha FG and have owned Yamaha electric guitars and basses before. They tend to pay good attention to fretwork and overall quality, even on budget instruments. Fit and finish is nice for the money, burst looks nice and having both strap buttons installed is unusual and a nice surprise. A guitar this size you'll probably want to play it standing up more than a full size one. I've had it for about a year. Stock strings are trash, installed a budget set of Martins and it's much better. "Vintage style" tuners seem to work so far. They look flimsier than typical full size tuners, but hopefully will hold up. Overall it holds tune. Happy with it for the money.

Great little music box
First impression was, it’s tiny! Here’s a pic beside a Martin D18 for scale. But it’s got a nice little top. Great vintage toner colour, put some oil on the fretboard as it was dry as a bone. Rosewood though, and nice! Sounds a little boxy but I’ve been playing it hard and it actually opened up a lot. Tuners work, frets are all level, doesn’t buzz, action at the nut is absolutely perfect btw. It comes filed right down to just clearing the first fret, not sure how they did that. It’s Indonesia made, not Japan. Fret ends a little sharp, I’ll give em a polish when I restring, not terrible though. Intonation isn’t perfect as I recall, but breaking it in. Not a compensated saddle. I’m keeping this in my work truck and I’m gonna love it. I’m sure it’ll open up more and I’m really impressed with the quality from the indonesian guitar makers and Yamaha, for this price. Very glad I bought this.

Great for kids and travel
Good fit for my 8 year old son. I enjoy playing it as well since my hands aren’t large (wear a medium or size 7 in medical gloves). Good sound, Yamaha build quality which would be much better than the cheap stuff that comes in at less than $200
