Awesome Adapter

Worked perfectly. Over time we have accumulated many laptops, with some missing their power cords. I didn't want to trash them, so I bought this to find out what was on all the hard drives. Very plug and play. Now I can wipe all the data and even try to sell the drives to make up for the cost of this adapter.

Worked like a charm

This seriously saved my bacon when motherboard shorted out and my other computer used a different drive system. Recovered 100% of data from fried computer! Very inexpensive solution too!

For old IDE drives, use the USB-2 receptacle, NOT the USB-3 receptacle.

Works fine. Having said that, I could NOT get it to work at all with an old IDE 3.5 inch Windows XP WD HDD. After a couple of frustrating hours and subsequently reading some of the reviews here I noticed that several people had encountered the same difficulty. The solution was very simple and 2-fold:1. Make sure that the HDD is fully connected and powered on BEFORE you plug in the USB cable to the receiving computer. Even so, it'll take minute or 2 before the drive actually shows up in your "My PC" window. Be patient - it'll show up.2. Do NOT plug the USB cable into a USB-3 receptacle. All you'll get is "Please insert a disk into the USB drive" message. Instead, plug into a USB-2 receptacle and it'll be just fine. Once it shows up, then click on the USB Drive letter to open the drive. Again, be patient. It'll take a little bit but as long as the drive itself is fine, everything will show up and you can then do whatever you need to. In my case it was to make a copy of all the data that was on that old IDE HDD.I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5, even though it works perfectly, because there was nothing in the sparce instructions that lead me to this solution for a non-working device. I had to search these comments to find out how to solve my problem.5 stars for the device, minus 1 because of my frustration with getting it to work.

Works for almost any hard drive with a couple catches

This adapter works great for almost every Hard drive. It is so handy I bought two. There are a couple things to remember after I used this on over 20 hard drives. You must turn the power on to the hard drive before plugging in the USB cable (about 15 to 20 sec). This gives the hard drive time to power up. With newer SATA hard drives and solid state drives this is not as important. It is essential with older IDE drives. There are adapters for connecting solid state drives to the USB port. This is not one of them. The power MUST be turned on to work.If the hard drive is really old (like from 1995 or older) this may not work. Not because the adapter is not working but because the hard drive cannot send its info to your computer. There are two other hard drives that this did not immediately work on. One was an early model SATA drive that needed a power plug like the older IDE drives take. The power cable on this device was too short to reach the plug. I was able to get a power cord extension which allowed me to power up the drive. The other drive was an ancient Maxtor 1.8 GB drive. The plug was recessed so far into the drive that the adapter would not engage to the drive. This is the only drive I have seen like this.

Works great for browsing, not for data transfer

Product works great if you are curious what is on an old hard drive, but when attempting to transfer old files off of the hard drive, transfers time out after a minute or so, with the attached hard drive no longer being recognized. This occurred when transferring data with a variety of old hard drives. Besides that, set up is simple and it's easy to use.

Small but Handy

The unit was very compact as expected. I have not attempted to use it yet because I was able to accomplish what I needed to do in another way. I believe it will come in handy in the near future. It included the power supply and ide power connector. It is very light but should be easy to connect and use.
