Q: It says to feed it to chicks 0-8 weeks of age. Do you need to feed it other stuff during that time, what about after 8 weeks?

HI there. You may feed the chick starter for now, it is formulated with everything they need. They may stay on starter or move on to the grower feed from 8 to 16 weeks. When they are about 16 weeks old, you move them to layer pellets. If you free range them, or give them other food, such as; oatmeal or corn, etc., then you must give them a little grit.

Q: Do the chicks get coccidia from their droppings?

They do not get Coccidiosis from their "own" droppings. But they do easily pick it up from protozoa found in the ground. The whole idea behind medicated chick starter is that it helps chicks fight off the early exposure to the germ. As they age, they become stronger and are most likely immune due to earlier exposure. There is another method of preventing Coccidiosis, and that involves vaccinating newly hatched chicks. If you are ordering directly from a hatchery, this is often an option for a few cents more per chick. The one other option is to limit exposure to older chickens and to areas where other chickens have been until the chicks are strong enough to fend off the Coccidiosis. However, the oocysts (Coccidiosis "eggs") are pretty much everywhere and if you take care of a flock already (or have a large population of wild birds on your property), there is a strong chance you will transmit the oocysts in your clothing, shoes, hair, etc. And that is part of the argument for vaccinating or medicating chicks when they are new to this world.

Q: Does anyone know if this is a non gmo food?

No it is not. Most corn is gmo origin unless stated.

Q: Why dos this product have Proposition 65 warning?

Standard on products sold in California if they contain chemicals on the Proposition 65 list and the amount of exposure caused by the product is not within defined safety limits.

Almost perfect

Definitely great for four chicks. They adapted well to the included water trough. They’ve not settled under the heat lamp yet but it works well. Disappointed that the feeder was missing the base for it. When we inquired to have a replacement, they expected us to send the entire product back, which we had our chicks by then so that wasn’t an option.
