Lovely Book

A simple and lovely book. Illustrations are beautiful. I bought book for my grandson, who lives in Florida and is unlikely to see snow anytime soon. My only complaint is the paper is dull, with no gloss, so it is hard to turn pages. I wish the publisher had used a better quality paper.

Something that little bit different

From the talented author/illustrator of  The Tree That's Meant to Be , this is a beautifully produced book that is atmospherically illustrated throughout. We start in late autumn where we find the two best friends ‘Fox’ & ‘Hare’ observing the changing landscape.A few pages on ‘Tern’ is about to fly south for winter and mentions the word ‘snow’ to the very inquisitive but polite duo. The two set out on an exploratory mission, meeting various creatures in the process, all with different definitions of the white stuff!ooOoo~ A THING CALLED SNOW~ YUVAL ZOMMER~ OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS~ 2020‘Printed in China’From the back cover:‘SNOW IS WHITE,LIKE YOUR FUR.’With these guiding words from Bear ~ Fox and Hare head off in search of a thing called snow. It’s a journey of discovery and a celebration of their first winter.Yuval Zommer brings the creatures and sweeping landscapes of the far north to this gorgeous picture book.’The current stock images above are indicative of the content and I hope that the ‘LOOK INSIDE’ facility will be along soon.ooOooMeasuring around 24.5 cm x 31 cm with matching dustjacket that has a glittery effect to the front, the thick hard cover opens to 32 good quality, matte finish pages, the story spanning 29, in double page spread format, bar the very last. The descriptive text is clear in black throughout, enhanced at times for emphasis, with a repeat theme. To the more observant, the accompanying illustrations have more in them than first meets the eye offering scope for further discussion, e.g. the meandering stream, the light of the full moon, nonchalant footprints in the snow and the owl that is not mentioned in the story, as the general storyline is neatly enhanced by the caring of others.[12 images attached ©️ Yuval Zommer & OUP/2020] The Tree That's Meant to Be

A Thing Called Snow

The story follows an arctic fox and hare who have never seen snow. They head off to search for it meeting other animals along the way. This is a beautifully illustrated story about two friends - an arctic fox and an arctic hare - who were born in the spring, grew up in the summer and have never seen snow. The story follows their journey and their meeting with other animals. As a picture book story this works extremely well but I have to admit I am a little disappointed. I was hoping that coming from the author of the Big Book of Bugs and Big Book of the Blue, that this would be a little more rooted in natural history, yet apart from the Arctic Tern mentioning that it will be flying south this is absent from the story - so the bear isn't hibernating, the caribou isn't with his herd etc. I also found myself wondering what all these animals were eating.I do realise I am not the target audience. :)Overall - lovely picture book, I was just hoping for something a little more.
