My 11-month-old has been playing with this for a couple of months now. She can't really use the sticks without wanting to stick them in her mouth so until she's a bit older, we use a different toy to make the sounds. I like playing simple tunes like Ode to Joy on it for her and she really enjoys it.

This product is the Schylling Ukulele, it is pear-shaped (as opposed to pineapple shaped like some ukes) and it has 4 strings, and geared tuning pegs which don't slip like friction pegs. Not that I hate friction pegs, but they're not always accurate. Anyway I bought this item because I was looking for a replacement for another, similar toy-grade ukulele that had gone missing some years ago. This one is very attractive, made of heavy laminate varnished wood with cool hula graphics in red and green! It has a thick neck and somewhat high action, which can be adjusted if you want to remove the nut and cut down the neck slot a little bit, or you can just tune it lower pitched (as I usually do for most ukuleles) and use a capo on it, that will lessen string height and you won't have to press on the strings as hard. I am a little bit skeptical of these bright, shiny red plastic strings on it, I did get it to be "in tune" but they are very stretchy right now because it's new. Eventually I will replace the strings. Mine came with 2 replacement strings, the 2 thinner outer ones, G and A, the ones most likely to break. This ukulele will serve me well as a toy/novelty/practice/lawnchair uke, and anyone who buys one of these must take into account that yes this is a for-fun item and not a professional grade ukulele. It came in a decorative cardboard display box which would look nice if you're just going to set it up on a shelf to look at, but it is actually playable and I'm pleased with it so far...I played Kumba Yah, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, The Hare Krishna Mantra, and Tiptoe Thru The Tulips. Oh, FYI, it will need a case if you remove it from the box, there is no case or gig bag included. As for giving it to a kid, I would say, maybe this is more of a collectable or perhaps a cosplay item than a kid's toy, just because it seems like a kid would break those red plastic strings in about 3 minutes. This is more of a grownup's retro style toy accessory, but that's just my opinion. My toy, mine mine mine...(age 53 going on 6) Thank you for reading.
