Wonderful debut book from an exceptionally talented author.
The Doughnut Fix, first book to a series from Jessie Janowitz, is a warm, funny and captivating story, told from the perspective of a young boy, uprooted from his comfortable, and full of excitement every day life in New York City, to a small hamlet upstate New York. For Tristan, the big city kid, and his two siblings Jeanine and Zoe, family’s move creates challenges beyond simple longing for familiarity of life left behind. There is a need, as well as necessity, for fitting in in new surroundings and for finding purpose in this strange, uncartain situation.Tristan takes us on a journey through his mind, as he attempts to chronicle his daily life filled with not only comical struggles, but also some pretty scary trials. His narrative voice is wonderful. He is serious at times, but also witty and hilarious, which makes for charming and captivating read. The book carries a great message for young readers, who might easily find themselves in situation similar to Tristan’s. There is always something good and interesting to be done. All you need to do is believe in yourself, never give up and keep trying. Great things will happen! While I definitely recommend this book to all young readers, I would also recommend it to parents. It’s a beautiful read for the whole family!

Good for a read aloud
I am picky about read-alouds. This one hits all the right notes and keeps me as the adult entertained. I am reading the sequel now and wanting to skip ahead and finish on my own. I won’t…. Probably………

Pretty good
There was a surprising amount educational value around business practices in this book. It kept my kids fairly well entertained. It was hard to find the recipe and the recipe looks pretty tedious but will probably end up giving it a try.

Daughter loves this
Daughter is 11 and she loves this book and the 2nd in the series "The Doughnut King". Last school year she read them in the library and switching schools she won't have access and asked me to buy it. Both have recipes inside!

So funny. Such a fresh voice
I have to rave about this book. So funny. Such a fresh voice. If you're from NYC, it's placed in the city, but has so many unique interesting tidbits that illuminate the city in a way I've never read before. Also, if you or your kid likes baking, or making money, this is great. I'd honestly recommend it for any kid 5 and up, including adults. It's a perfect read-with-your-kid book.

Fantastic read! Can’t wait for the next one!!
Fantastic! My 9 yr old son went from the last page to the first to read it again straight away! We actually read it together and I enjoyed it just as much. The details really bring the story to life with lots of parent loving messages built in - sibling relationships, family values and rules, innovation and independence. Plus recipes in the back!!
